Saint Rose of Lima Outreach to the Poor Committee

For fourteen years, Father O’Sullivan, former Pastor of Sacred Heart Church, contributed (tithe) 10% of the Sacred Heart Parish Sunday collection to help Churches, Parishes, Priests, Sisters and Lay Ministers or Missionaries who are serving the poor. The contribution fund was divided into three sections: one-third for third world countries (Latin America, Africa and Asia); one-third for Southern United States and one-third for local needs.

Decisions for the distribution of the funds were made by a parish committee, headed by Sandie Dominguez, along with five committee members one of which was Lupe Anguiano who did most of the research of needy World and United States community projects. Helping poor people is a great blessing.

One of the projects Lupe brought to the committee for support consideration was the – Poor Clare Sisters of Divine Mercy program in Chalco, Mexico. The project was approved by the Committee and Fr. Daniel O’Sullivan, resulting in the following:

The contributions helped the Sisters build a Skills Training Classrooms that will be used to train Indigenous and poor women in employment skills – so they will find employment in Mexico; the goal is to avoid crossing the Border to seek work in the United States. The Sisters have been involved in this project for about 10 years. Funds were used by the Sisters to help:

·         Recruit and train Indigenous women from Villages in the State of Chiapas, Mexico and also other parts of Mexico.

·         Develop updated skills training in literacy, education, sewing, baking, cooking, sales, marketing, and other skills useful in the Mexico market.

·         Assist improve communication and working relations between Villagers in San Miguel la Sardina in the State of Chiapas, where they recruit women.

 Stewards of the Earth:

Most importantly the Sisters are working with Stewards of the Earth to develop two  Computer Training Centers – one in the training center in Chalco, Mexico and the other in the Elementary School in the Village of San Miguel la Sardina.
